Charles Roe was born in 1832 in Carrington, Hammersmith. He came to New Zealand in 1840, arriving at Petone before purchasing a farm in Karori. Three years later, he took part in the Melbourne gold rush, returning in 1854 to take over his father's interest in Barret's Hotel. In 1859, Roe published the New Zealand Advertiser with Messrs J & E Bull, but left the firm just three years later. He then worked for the Hansard for seven years, and in 1874 came to the Manawatu and settled in Feilding. He built the Denbigh Hotel, which was later taken over by his son when he retired fourteen years later.
