Ernest Short was born in 1872, in Wellington. After his birth, the family moved to Feilding, and Short was educated in the public schools there, before going into farming with his uncle W. Baker at Makino. He stayed with his uncle for several years before purchasing what would be the beginning of his farm Parorangi, where he began a successful Hereford breeding program that won him several awards around the country.

Short was a well-known member of the community, and held several titles throughout his life. He was a member of the Kiwitea County Council, Chairman of the Waituna West School Committee, a member of the Manawatu & West Coast A&P Association, and a member of the New Zealand Hereford Breeders Association.

Short was married in April 1892, to Jessie Ashworth, and they went on to have several sons (the exact number is unknown). Ernest Short died in 1924, followed by his wife in 1945.
