John Manson was the eldest son of teacher Donald Manson, originally from Morayshire, Scotland. John was born in 1820, and received his early education from his father. At age 11, he was sent to the Nairn Academy, where he gained some of the highest prizes awarded.
He was described as a quiet, unassuming man, who did not participate in local affairs or general politics, but was nonetheless well-respected in the community for his honest and upright character, his work ethic, and the values that he passed onto the young men he employed. He passed away suddenly on August 6, 1890.
The caption under this photo reads "The late Mr John Manson", so it is likely that this was a portrait that was published in the paper after his death.
