Hot Air Balloons in Manchester Square

Feilding & District Information Centre

Feilding & District Information Centre was situated in this building till May 2017 (Manchester Square), after a brief stay with the Feilding Library they have now moved to the Feilding Railway Station in June 2017. About Feilding Welcome to friendly Feilding, voted NZ's Most Beautiful Town, where housing is affordable, the lifestyle is relaxed and friendly, no traffic lights, free parking while you shop with all the benefits of the city just 20kms away. Location Feilding is well placed geographically, just 2 hours drive from most of the southern half of the North Island including Hawkes Bay, Lake Taupo, Taranaki, Mt Ruapehu and Wellington (NZ's capital) providing a gateway to the South Island. The Manawatu District's location offers easy access to four seaports, seven airports, an airforce base and two large military bases. The Manawatu District covers an area of 2,780 square kilometres and is bounded by two rivers (the Rangitikei in the north and the Manawatu in the south), the Ruahine Ranges to the east and the Tasman Sea to the west. Our nearest city, Palmerston North (only 19kms from Feilding), has a population of over 75,000 providing extra employment opportunities and easy access to all the city facilities. History Named after Colonel William Feilding, (a Director for the Emigrants and Colonists Aid Corporation Ltd), Feilding as part of the Manchester Block was purchased from the Wellington Provincial Government with the first European immigrants arriving on the 22 January 1874. Free passage was given to 2000 emigrants with guaranteed work for `able bodied' men within ten miles of the settlement, clearing trees, building the Main Trunk railway line and farming. Many streets in Feilding and outlying settlements in the Manawatu are named after the Directors of the Corporation. Manchester Street and Square are after the Chairman, the Duke of Manchester, while Kimbolton Road is named after his Estate. The Earl of Denbigh is remembered on another square while Henry Ashhurst gave his name to an outlying township as did Arthur Halcombe.

Feilding Business Awards

Feilding Business Awards

DescriptionThe Feilding Excellence in Business Awards has been running since the mid-1990s. Organised by Feilding Promotion, it focuses on customer service rather than financial performance. Organised by Feilding and District Promotion, the event focuses on customer service rather than financial performance and involves a "mystery shopper" style of judging. Project manager Raewyn Loader urged the community to stop by the Feilding Information Centre to cast their vote. "We want everyone in the district to nominate a business who they think deserves recognition," Loader said. "We want to build on the tradition of being friendly in Feilding. Get involved, feel good factor, have your say. "A vibrant and healthy business community impacts positively on our community, helping to attract new residents and businesses." Loader said the awards had become the highlight of the business community's calendar. The night had sold out each year. Every nominated business receives an anonymous phone call and visit, with marks allocated to each question based on the level of customer service satisfaction. Each year the awards show has a different theme or dress-up. In 2015 event-goers were required to dress up in a Gatsby theme. In 2015 it was feared it would be the last hurrah for Feilding's business awards, after changes to community funding in the Manawatu District Council's Long Term Plan nearly led to its demise. The awards are now held biennially, with the Manawatu Business Awards held in the off-year. Nominations forms are also printed in the Feilding-Rangitikei Herald.

Makoura Lodge

Makoura Lodge

Makoura Lodge was established in 1998. The Lodge was built with as many local materials as possible. The Lodge features Macrocarpa timber, milled from the property and rocks out of the nearby Coal Creek River for stone work. The impressive open log fire surround and bar top are made from a Totara log that survived a scrub fire on the property. . The historic library, which guests can enjoy, is part of Hugh’s Great Grandfathers collection, who was a school teacher at Kimbolton School, studied law, became a solicitor and taught himself 11 languages! In 1903 the original Homestead was built by McIntyre brothers - Hugh and Jack. This stands today as “Glenluce” and was named after Glenluce in Galloway, Scotland. The house was built mainly from Totara trees grown and milled on the farm. Hugh and Jack's father lived in Wanganui and would often come down to give them a helping hand with the house. Being a joiner he was responsible for a lot of the finer details inside Glenluce, such as the beautiful Totara fire surround. Whilst this was being built the McIntyre’s lived in a Whare, built in 1896. This building still stands today and is used as the horse stables for the Horse Trekking. Stay at Glenluce Homestead.
