Settlers Day 1999

The idea behind the event, first held on January 21, 1995, is to celebrate the anniversary of the arrival on the site of Feilding of the first immigrants brought to the Manchester Block by the Emigrants and Colonists Aide Corporation. Passengers from the ship 'The Duke of Edinburgh' are recorded as having arrived on January 22, 1874.

Erection of the Clock Tower

For the whole of 1999, debate raged about the advisability of building a new clock tower to house the 98-year-old clock removed from the original Post Office and stored 50 years ago. Due to the persistence of the organising committee and the support of the District Council and many Feilding residents, Manchester Square has an Edwardian tower and the clock tower bell rang in the beginning of 2000 as the climax of a huge Millennium party.
