In October 1995, after the last meeting of council, the outgoing mayor Caryll Clausen (pictured), was presented with a wakahuia by the members of the Taumata Te Ra Marae.
The wakahuia, which is a kind of treasure box, was carved by Kelvin Kereama, from a piece of totara that came from the Manawatu River.
