Hato Pāora College

The homestead at Hato Pāora (Saint Paul's) College. This building was originally constructed in 1913 for a local farming family on the outskirts of Feilding. In 1947, the property was bought by the Catholic church and transformed into Hato Pāori College, a boarding school for Māori boys. In it's prime, the pictured building housed the priests and four dormitories, and was named Ihaka House. Sadly, it was demolished in 2016 after concerns were raised with the school board regarding black rot bacteria and extensive water damage.

Written on the back of this photograph: 'Originally stud sheep farmer's residence, now Catholic college to aid agricultural training to Māori boys.'

Hocken Bros Horse Sale, Grassmere

Sale of Horses by Hocken Bros

The Hocken Bros were well-established horse traders in Manawatu region. They frequently held sales in and around Feilding, as well as at their farm in Grassmere. Auctioneering firm Gorton & Son seemed to work quite closely with the Hocken Bros, as newspapers from that time period mention them together frequently.

Feilding Saleyards

Feilding Saleyards, located on Manchester Square near the Denbigh Hotel, date unknown.

The first livestock sale made here was conducted in May 1880, by Jack Stevens and Colonel Gorton. They sold 100 head of cattle that day. Colonel Gorton went on to be a firm fixture at the saleyards - his firm Gorton & Son was one of four involved in regular weekly sales. The building in the photograph would have been where Gorton & Son conducted their business, as evidenced by the sign-writing on the front and the roof.

Rangiwahia-Ruahine Dairy Company Factory

Staff of the Rangiwahia-Ruahine Dairy Company standing outside the factory with teams of horses pulling carts presumably loaded with dairy products. The factory was built by L.G. West of Palmerston North early in 1898, and began production the following year. At that time it was managed by W.C. Dixon. Water power was introduced to the factory in late 1906.

The Makino Butter Factory was established in 1883, under the ownership of William Wescombe Corpe. This photo shows staff outside the factory, believed to have been taken in 1900. In 1903, the factory was sold to Joseph Nathan & Co.

Staff at Makino Butter Factory, c. 1900

This photo shows staff outside the Makino Butter Factory in 1900. The factory was founded by William Wescome Corpe, a pioneer of the Manawatu dairy industry. He arrived in the Feilding region in the early 1880's and had constructed a butter and cheese factory at Makino by 1883. He sold the factory in 1903, to Joseph Nathan & Co. Ltd. of Wellington. Stanway Creamery

Stanway Creamery was located near the junction of Stanway Road and Makino Road, and was built in 1893, for the purpose of supplying Corpe's factory at Makino with fresh cream to be churned into butter.

One of Charles Wildbore's children surrounded by chickens, on the family farm in Pohangina. Wildbore was a well-known amateur photographer during the early 1900's, as well as owning a small dairy farm and apiary.

First Feilding Industrial Show, c. 1905

The crowd at the first Feilding Industrial Show, on 22 February, 1905. The show was held on the Jockey Club grounds, and hosted by the Feilding Industrial, Agricultural, and Pastoral Association.

The man on the white horse has been identified as John Enright. The others in the photo are unknown.

Sash & Door Co. Timber Wagons, c. 1907

Timber wagons from Sash & Door Co. about to move off, carting timber from Komako to Ashurst. Komako School can be seen on the right in this photo. The other buildings in the photos are various dwellings for teamsters, sawmill employees, and blacksmith's. There are also some stables used by the teamsters for their horses should they stay overnight.

Umutoi Sawmill, c. 1910

The sawmill at Umutoi may have been located on the Linklater property or on the adjoining Russell property, and it possibly was owned by the Jensen family at one time. The mill was still going in 1927, but the date of its closure is unknown.

The creator of the photograph is also unknown.

The Saleyards are an important part of Feilding history, and at one point they were considered one of the largest yards in the southern hemisphere.

Back of Postcard: Quail Butter was produced at the foothills of the Ruahine Mountains - 2000 feet above sea-level. It was produced under ideal conditions with copious supplies of pure water. Cream was collect each day, and all cream was pasteurized before 10.30a.m.. Quail Butter won the World's Butter Championship, Auckland Exhibition, 1925. Quail butter also won a Gold Medal at the U.S.A panama-Pacific International Exhibition. San Francisco. 1915
