William Morton was a Yorkshire native, born in 1849. He came to New Zealand in 1870, landing in Wellington before moving to the Rangitikei to gain "colonial experience" and purchasing a farm in 1882. Morton was a member of the Kiwitea County Council, and was in fact significantly involved in all local government affairs.
