Empire Tavern, Stafford Street, 1973. The Empire Tavern licence was the first Tavern Licence granted in New Zealand. In 1880 Mr. E. Belve applied for a licence to build the Empire Hotel, near the railway station. His application was not successful until the following year. In the late 1960s the Empire Hotel was rebuilt and became a tavern. Its owner was Jack Gleeson, the renowned rugby coach.
