Tivoli Theatre - Coronation lighting, 1953. The first movies in Feilding were shown in the early 1900's in the Drill Hall where the Civic Centre now stands, 1983. It appears that before 1914 at different times there were severeal other theatres and some were used as cinemas. One of these was built in 1907/08 by local people. The Tivoli was built in the mid 1920s. Construction took two or three years owing to a cement shortage. In 1927 Mr Fred Groombridge, senior purchased the Tivoli Theatre and it remained in the Groombridge familyuntil it was sold to Mr Jim Meekins in 1951. Mr Meekins later sold the theatre to Kerridge Odeon who owned it until it was destroyed by fire in February 1972.
