The building was built in 1965, but it was the third BNZ Bank to occupy the site, the first which was opened in September 1881. The Strong Room owners Murray Meads & Paul Humphries have converted the former BNZ building on the corner of Fergusson and Manchester Street into an upmarket restaurant. Documents and photographs of the early days of the bank were found in the strong room, and it was the discovery of these documents that inspired the name of the restaurant. o
